Absolute Truth

This can be a very touchy subject, but for me it is a no brainer. It kind of goes along with what I said yesterday about believing that the Bible is the complete, accurate, inspired word of God.

Historically, the Bible has been proven accurate by both Christian and non-Christian historians.

"Dr. Nelson Glueck, perhaps the utmost modern authority on Israeli archeology, said: "No archeological discovery has ever controverted a Biblical reference. Scores of archeological findings have been made which confirm in clear outline or in exact detail historical statements in the Bible. And, by the same token, proper evaluation of Biblical descriptions has often led to amazing discoveries." {emphasis mine}

There are verses in the Bible that coincide directly with scientific fact, long before any of these facts were known by man. For example:

The Earth is round, not flat as once believed (Isaiah 40:22).
Atmospheric circulation (Ecclesiastes 1:6).
Field of Gravity (Job 26:7).
Biological importance of blood to life (Leviticus 17:11). (see The Bible is True).

Another proof of the accuracy of the Bible is the number of prophecies that have been fulfilled from the prophets. For example, Isaiah predicted that a "prince called Cyrus,...would set the Jews free from captivity one hundred and seventy years" later.

The point is, I could "argue" the accuracy of the Bible all day long. I just wanted to confirm a few things right up front so that you could see the beginning of the basis of why I believe in the absolute truth of the Bible. There are specific passages that I will examine in detail further along in this blog.

I base all of my opinions on the Bible, and how it says we should live. To me, absolute truth means there is black and white. It may be a difficult answer, it may be something you and I don't want to hear, or follow through on, but whatever the question, the answer can be found in the word of God.

I'm going to start with something I think is a very simple concept that many, many people have made entirely too complicated. Prop 8 in California was recently overturned. Prop 8 was passed in California as a bill stating that marriage is one man and one woman. (Can you imagine if we could tell our forefathers that shortly after the year 2000 we would have to define marriage as one man and one woman?)

Prop 8 was a good thing. I was actually surprised that uber-liberal California of all places, would pass such a bill. But now it has been overturned, and that is a mistake. The Bible says “Do not practice homosexuality, having sex with another man as with a woman. It is a detestable sin." Leviticus 18:22

"9 For the law was not intended for people who do what is right. It is for people who are lawless and rebellious, who are ungodly and sinful, who consider nothing sacred and defile what is holy, who kill their father or mother or commit other murders. 10 The law is for people who are sexually immoral, or who practice homosexuality, or are slave traders, liars, promise breakers, or who do anything else that contradicts the wholesome teaching 11 that comes from the glorious Good News entrusted to me by our blessed God." I Timothy 1:9-11

You'll notice in this passage that it is not JUST homosexuality that is named a sin. And it is important to remember that sin is sin is sin...to God there is no difference between lying and murder. Today's Christians tend to "rate" sin, and homosexuality is way up there on their list.

Romans 5:8 says "But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us." God knows all the ins and outs of our lives. The good, the bad, and the ugly. The gay, the straight, the murderer, the liar, the cheater, the fornicator...we are all loved by God. We have been since before we were born. And we are all sinners.

The Bible also says " 1 There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit. 2 For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made me free from the law of sin and death. "
Romans 8:1-2

"37 Yet in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us. 38 For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, 39 nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord." Romans 8:37-39

As Christians, we have a responsibility, nay, an obligation to stand up for Biblical principals in our society. We cannot just sit back, throw up our hands and say, "well, the country is just going to hell in a hand basket."

We have said that long enough. Now is the time to get off our collective butts, and start making a difference for what we believe. Get out and vote! If you are not registered to vote, GET registered. It is our civic and spiritual responsibility. In the vote this past Tuesday to choose the candidates for Governor of Michigan, about 20% of registered voters turned out. That's pathetic. And it's just plain shameful.
