Yes, it is still called the Bill of RIGHTS....the Socialists haven't made one of the most precious documents in the history of the United States politically incorrect...yet.
The first Amendment to the Constitution of the United States of America, and therefore the first Amendment listed in the Bill of Rights is as follows:
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances. (www.billofrights.org)
This is huge. HUGE. The first phrase alone: Congress shall make NO LAW respecting an establishment of religion, OR PROHIBITING THE FREE EXERCISE THEREOF. (Um, what would you call banning prayer in public school? At graduations?)
The founding fathers made this the first amendment because it was the most important to them. It was in response to the Church of England making itself the "official" church of the colonies when they were first formed (wikipedia).
In other words: The founding fathers, and the men whose blood stained red the battlefields of the Revolutionary War were telling England (and the government): DON'T TELL US HOW, WHO, WHEN OR WHERE TO WORSHIP! Their freedom was SO important to them, they were willing to DIE to ensure its continuation for their future generations.
George Washington said: "...the Government of the United States ... gives to bigotry no sanction, to persecution no assistance. ... May the children of the Stock of Abraham, who dwell in this land, continue to merit and enjoy the good will of the other Inhabitants; while every one shall sit in safety under his own vine and figtree, and there shall be none to make him afraid. May the father of all mercies scatter light and not darkness in our paths, and make us all in our several vocations useful here, and in his own due time and way everlastingly happy."
It's not so much about being a Christian nation, which America obviously is NOT (more on that later), but that the government not interfere with my right, with YOUR right to practice your beliefs. If you're Jewish, fantastic. The government should have ZERO say in your religious beliefs, and whether or not you eat pork. Are you an Atheist? I would vehemently disagree with you, but you, too, are protected under the first part of this First Amendment. The government may never impose any religious belief on you.
It's time to give the power back to the people here folks. The government was created soley to protect our rights and freedoms. It was not created to babysit our children. It was not created to take my money so people can kill their unborn children. It was not created to pay people to not work. It was not created to pay huge amounts of money to big corporations who can't manage money. It was NOT created put ME and MY children in so much debt that it really is irreparable.
It is time to take a stand. The time for discussion is over. We do NOT work for the government, they work for US. We need to remind them of that!
You go girl!
